Rovers suffered their third defeat in a row this time against a hard working Ashton Boys side. Again though as stated too many times this season regardless of the result some players lack of commitment was very evident and in this match proved costly.
The first game brought a 2-0 victory to Ashton with a goal scored in each half. Rovers suffered a great loss though when hard working midfielder George Cole left the field in the first half after being injured. May I pass on the clubs best wishes to George for a speedy recovery from the nasty gash received. From the start the game was quite scrappy as Rovers struggled to get the ball forward. Balls were just played forward to no one and made easy for Ashton to defend but this was not just down to bad passing but a lack of movement from players off of the ball to make themselves available to receive a pass. Ashton took the lead in the 3rd minute when a low free kick from the edge of the box left an easy tap in as Rovers failed to clear the ball from close to their line. After Cole's departure Rovers had to play with 6 players for several minutes until Adam Porter came on as a substitute just before the interval and during this period Brad Lewis and Kameron Brown ably assisted by goalkeeper Ryan Rowe defended well as Ashton tried to push home their player advantage.
The second half saw Rovers make several positional changes in an effort to get back into the game and this saw Nathan Hewitt have the first shot of the half which was well taken by the Ashton goalkeeper. Again though a lack of determination for players to get back and help their defence saw Ashton miss a good chance. Rovers began to battle for the ball more in midfield and hard working Aaron Mansfield hit a speculative shot from the half way line that forced the Ashton goalkeeper to push the ball wide. Apart from that though Rovers were unable to create any chances as every time they had the ball their options were limited by players losing the ball easily when it was passed to them. In the 36th minute an Ashton player received the ball in his own half and ran right through past several Rovers players none of whom tried to put a tackle in to score a simple 2nd goal.
The second game saw Rovers players show much more commitment but unable to make the breakthrough until the second half. In the 1st minute Morgan Wager saw his free kick from distance flicked over by Danny Ball and Conor Harris was also unlucky a few minutes later when he turned a Wager cross just wide of the goal. At the other end though casual defending by dwelling on the ball gifted Ashton a clear chance which they put just wide. Rovers continued to apply most of the pressure up until half time but were unable to create any further chances.
The second half started with Rovers creating a couple of chances which saw Ben Alexander hit the bar from goalkeeper Ethan Malschuk's long clearance and the same player following a good run and pass from Wager hit a weak shot straight at the goalkeeper. On the break Ashton showed how dangerous they could be when a good passing move ended with a shot from close range that went just wide. In the 31st minute an excellent run and superb low cross by Alexander found Wager charging through into the box and he found the net with a deft touch past the goalkeeper into the corner of the net. With Rovers pressing for the equalising goal Ashton cemented their victory with a break in the last minute which left their player with a simple tap in. |
