CITY GET THE BLUES
By Steve Lewis.

Rovers final game of the season saw them overcome their City counterparts and move into 2nd place in the league. Only Downend Rangers if they win all of their remaining games can wrestle the runners up spot from Rovers in what has been a very exciting season.

The first game saw City have the better of the play for the majority of the match but Rovers showed their battling qualities to keep a clean sheet. Even the couple of players who may not have been on the best of form made up for this by putting in a hard working performance in support of their team mates. City had the first of few chances in the game when Bradley Davies in the Rovers goal pushed a shot wide and to safety. With both sides defending well only one other chance came which was in the last minute of the half and again Davies pulled off a good save. During the half every time a City player thought they had time on the ball Rovers were quick to react and put in many good challenges but they themselves were unable to create any chances as City also defended well in what was becoming quite a tense encounter.

The second half also saw City having more of the play as Rovers struggled to get forward but they could not make the breakthrough as Rovers continued to defend excellently. The one chance that City did have brought a 3rd good save out of Davies and his clearance saw Rovers nearly take the lead when Conor Harris hit a left footed shot that was well saved. This seemed to inspire Rovers and they started to get more into the game. In the 35th minute another Harris shot was handled in the box. From the resulting penalty Ricky Kirby found the corner of the net with a well struck shot to give Rovers the lead that they kept to the end of the game.

The 2nd game saw Rovers start the much stronger and they nearly took the lead in the first few seconds as City's pass back from their kick off fell into the path of Ben Alexander who saw his shot well saved. Despite applying the pressure it was City who opened the scoring in the 8th minute with a good shot from the edge of the box in what was the first time they had got near to Rovers goal. Rovers determination to get to the ball first stopped City from moving forward and in the 12th minute Brad Lewis who had an excellent game in Rovers defence came forward to pass to Danny Ball who had his shot parried. The ball fell to Alexander who saw his attempted cross handled to give Rovers their 2nd penalty of the match despite many protests from City. Alex Skuse took the kick and he drove the ball home to restore Rovers overall advantage. As the first half came to a close a good Rovers move involving Ball and Alexander saw the ball find Nathan Hewitt whose driven shot went just wide. It looked like he was just getting a sighter for goal as just before the whistle he drove an excellent free kick into the roof of City's net and increase Rovers lead.

The second half saw Rovers in control and any time that City tried to attack they were unable to get passed Rovers very solid defence. In fact there were only a few chances all of which fell to Rovers. The first saw a good run by Skuse as he cut in from the right only to see his shot pushed behind. From the resulting corner Alexander headed the ball wide and later the same player latched onto a clearance from Lewis but put his shot wide. So in the end Rovers secured a 3-1 overall victory from two tense but exciting matches.

May I take this opportunity to thank everybody involved with the team for the excellent effort that has been put in this year be it managing/training the team, collecting subs, administration/secretarial duties, putting up/taking down nets and finally for putting up with stato.
