Rovers missed out on the chance of going 2nd in the table after suffering a 2-1 defeat against their local rivals.
Both sides made reasonable starts to the first game by trying to play good football but the first chance did not come until the 5th minute when Warmley had a shot that went wide. Shortly afterwards a goalmouth scramble saw Kameron Brown clear the ball off of the line. Rovers made several attempts to get forward but were thwarted by a resolute Warmley defence and some poor passing. Warmley opened the scoring when a long clearance was headed forward by Brad Lewis but the ball fell at the feet of the Warmley striker who drove the ball home from the right edge of the box. As the half progressed Rovers had more of the play but were unable to get back on terms despite creating a few chances which saw Nathan Hewitt shoot wide and have a header from a corner blocked. Ben Alexander who came on as a 15th minute substitute also saw a shot go wide following a good team move. George Cole made several good runs down the right flank but his crosses were well defended.
Rovers pushed forward at the beginning of the second half but their final pass or cross did not reach their intended target. In the 28th minute though Rovers were awarded a free kick just inside the Warmley half and Hewitt drove the ball low and into the corner of the net to bring the scores level. Both sides tried to score that elusive goal but found defences on top. However, towards the end of the game Ethan Malschuk in the Rovers goal was called upon to make 3 good saves to keep the scores level and Hewitt was unlucky from another free kick when the ball went over the bar so the game ended as a 1-1 draw.
Rovers started the 2nd game with a good passing move which ended with a shot from Morgan Wager which went over the bar. Warmley looked dangerous when going forward and brought a good save out of Samuel Johnson. At the other end Danny Ball saw his shot saved following a good one two with Alex Skuse and Conor Harris had a couple of shots saved but these were the only real chances as the game continued to be quite even.
With the scores level all was to be played for in the second half and it was Warmley who broke the deadlock and scored the only goal of the game in the 23rd minute when a long clearance was knocked over the advancing Johnson's head and tapped into an empty net. Rovers again had more of the play but poor passing and a lack of movement meant they found it hard to create many chances in fact Warmley were unlucky not to increase their lead when a good move led to a shot going just wide. Towards the end of the game though Rovers missed a great chance when Ball shot straight at the goalkeeper when only a couple of yards out and the hard working Wager saw a shot hit the outside of the post but unfortunately they were unable to score that all important goal to bring the sides level. |
