A weakened Rovers side fought hard but ended up losing this quarter final tie against a well organised and good footballing Bristol City side.
The first game started quite evenly with both sides trying to play a passing game but Rovers were unable to get through a good City defence as several passes forward were easily dealt with before reaching the City box. Likewise Rovers defence of Ben O'Brien and Kameron Brown also defended well which restricted City who were kicking down the slope to several long distance shots that in the early stages of the game did not trouble Samuel Johnson in the Rovers goal. City began to have the better of the play and Johnson brought off an excellent save from close range in the 10th minute to deny City the lead. Rovers started to get back into the game by playing some good football but they were still unable to create a clear chance and it was again down to a further excellent save by Johnson in injury time when he pushed a fierce drive from distance over the bar to keep Rovers level at half time.
The second half started with City pushing forward and again within the first few minutes they brought 2 further good saves out of Johnson before taking the lead in the 26th minute when a shot was driven home from close range. City continued to have the best of the play and look the most likely to score but further good goalkeeping and defending from Johnson, O'Brien and Brown kept them out. In the final minute of the game though a run by Nathan Hewitt past several City defenders saw him prod the ball past the City keeper from a narrow angle only for it to be cleared off of he line and maintain City's one goal advantage going into the second game.
The second game saw a very determined Rovers side start well by playing some good football but also defending well when needed through Brad Lewis and Adam Porter who was very strong in the tackle. Their first chance came in the 8th minute when a Lewis free kick found Arthur Hawkins in the box but his left footed shot went across the goal and wide. Rovers continued to press forward and Hawkins saw a similar effort go wide following a Danny Ball corner. Further pressure saw Ben Alexander head wide from a Ball cross but Rovers were unable to break the deadlock before half time.
City kicked off the second half and immediately went forward and opened the scoring as their player easily went past the Rovers defence to score from close range. In the 25th minute though Alexander had a chance to bring Rovers level but he put his shot wide when through on goal. The same player though was rewarded in the 30th minute for his efforts when he volleyed home Hawkins cross to bring Rovers back into the game. Rovers continued to push forward in search of a goal to bring the aggregate scores level which saw an Alex Skuse header pushed wide by the City goalkeeper. With the game entering its last few minutes Rovers pushed Lewis forward from defence but City broke away to firstly see a shot hit the bar and then score their second of the game when a shot was parried by Ryan Rowe only for the rebound to be hit home. In the last couple of minutes Rovers started to knock long balls forward and Lewis was presented with a couple of difficult chances neither of which he was able to take so the scoreline remained at 2-1 to City which gave them an overall 3-1 victory. |
